On tonight’s CMA Country Christmas special on ABC, two-time CMA Female Vocalist of the Year Trisha Yearwood covers Dolly Parton’s classic #8 hit from the early eighties, “Hard Candy Christmas.”
“What was I thinking, right?” Trisha laughs. “You know, we recorded this for the duet album that Garth [Brooks] and I did and I’ve always loved this song. And I think the key to covering anything that Dolly Parton has ever recorded is to try not to do the Dolly licks. I mean, you can’t, because only Dolly can.”
“It’s a tribute to her version,” Trisha continues. “But to try to do all those little curls just makes you look bad. Because nobody can do it like Dolly. So my take is my take, but I just think it’s a great song.”
Both “Hard Candy Christmas” and “Santa Baby” — the other song Trisha does on CMA Country Christmas — are on her 2016 holiday album with her husband, Christmas Together. You can catch the 2017 edition of the annual CMA yuletide special tonight at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
This weekend, Trisha and Garth bring the North American leg of their World Tour to a close Saturday night in Nashville.
